How can Taijiquan principles be adapted to chain whip?

Taijiquan Taijiquan is an art form without limits. It means “the Supreme Ultimate Fist”. Martial Art, meditation, graceful, flowing movement, therapeutic exercise, understanding Energy, becoming one with the Tao, all these and more are the potential results of correct and patient practice of Taijiquan. The true internal meaning of it is the ability to recognize and interpret and move in harmony with those forces that shape us and the universe around us at all levels of Body, Mind and Spirit, the ability to control the mental and physical balance of Yin and Yang.

Its principles

Taijiquan has some principals. They are the follows—

  • The head should be held upright.
  • Sink and relax the chest, raise and widen the back.
  • Relax and soften the waist so that it turns freely.
  • Differentiate between full and empty, between substantial and insubstantial.
  • Sink the shoulders and elbows.
  • Use Mind not force
  • Co-ordinate upper and lower.
  • Harmonize the Internal and External.
  • Continuity without interruption, mutually joined and unbroken.
  • Seek stillness in movement.

Chain Whip

Chain whip, a weapon used in some Asian martial arts, consists of several metal rods. The ends are joined end-to-end by rings to form a flexible chain. The whip has a handle at one end and a metal dart at the other. The metal dart is used for slashing or piercing an opponent. Two cloth flag are often attached, one at or near the dart end of the whip, and the other may cover the whip’s handle. The flag or flags add visual appeal that enhances a wushu performance and also help stabilize the whip, enhancing the performer’s control and reduces the performer’s risk of inadvertently striking himself/herself.

How can Taijiquan Principles be Adapted to Chain Whip?

Taijiquan principles can be adapted to chain whip. Through the mechanics of chansijing, Taijiquan’s power comes directly from the core. The logic of power generation in chansijing is that the power is generated from the legs, directed through the hips and waist, and then expressed in the hands. So the movement of the chain whip would not come just from the shoulders or the wrists but it should be felt through the legs to the ground. Relaxation, one of the first things in Taijiquan, helps to read and control the movements of chain whip.
