Think Positive – The key to Well-Being

By: Natalie

“Is the glass half full or half empty?” – a common question we often hear while mentioning the importance of attitude. Just as the same amount of water if the same glass can appear half full to some, can also appear half empty to others – depending on their attitude. Seeing the glass of water from half full perspective rather than half empty is positive thinking.

Positive thinking is a mental attitude that expects good and favorable results and focuses on words and actions that are conductive to growth and success. There are ups and downs in life. Positive thinking, or optimism, doesn’t mean living in the fantasy of a perfect world and ignore life’s less pleasant situations. It is the art of approaching the unpleasantness in a more positive and productive way.

The idea of positive thinking is that if one can think of achieving a goal, he can one day achieve it. It is supported by researches that these personality traits — optimism and pessimism — can affect many areas of the health and well-being. Positive thinking also is a key part of effective stress management. If one thinks positively of achieving a goal, his subconscious mind will start visioning the achievement and planning toward achieving the goal.

When someone can see things positively and constructively, looking for the good in each situation and each person, he develops a tendency to remain naturally positive. Since the quality of life is determined by how one feels, thinking about what he wants will keep his mind off of what he does not want or fears.

Human beings inevitably face difficulties and challenges, problems and disappointments, temporary setbacks and defeats. While some people will take these seriously and feel that their entire life has come to an end, positive thinkers will see the good in it. If one can draw upon his own resources to respond effectively to each challenge, he grows to become a stronger and better person. This is how a positive thinker will see the good side of every situation – even if it disguised as a road block.

The secret behind the success of successful people is their attitude towards life. One of the characteristics of successful men and women is that they recognize the inevitability of temporary disappointments and defeats, and they accept them as a normal and natural part of life. They do everything possible to avoid problems, but when problems come, they learn from them, rise above them, and continue onward in the direction of their dreams.

The summary of positive thinking is the common aphorism, “As a man thinketh in his heart so is he”. A good career or a character trait is not a thing of random chance, but is the consequence of continuous efforts in right thinking which lead to right action. By the same process, a bad characteristics are also the result of negative thinking and consequently, wrong actions.

So if we want to be successful and achieve our goals, the one secret rule to remember is “think positive”. Thus, we can overcome every challenge with strong determination. As Winston Churchill said, “A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty”. If we want our difficulties to become opportunities – positive thinking is the key.
