By: Gregg Jones

It is a joyous feeling to be around a well trained dog. Trained dogs are very sociable. In addition to that, they are also at a lesser risk of biting since they do not jump up on people. Even in environments which are very distracting, these trained dogs stay calm.

Some dogs are abandoned in the pound. As opposed to that, dogs which are well trained have the possibility of staying with the same owner. Journal of the American veterinary medical association conducted a research and found that training was not given to 96% of the shelter dogs.

Boundaries can be taught to the dogs through training and hence you can help them to be more comfortable when they are around human beings. There are lots of professionals who train dogs and there are different variety of programs to train the dogs. However, if a person possesses business card, it does not mean that they are qualified to train your dogs.

In order to find a good dog trainer, enquire your family and friends because they might know a trainer who is good. You can also ask the owners of the dog while you take your dog out for a walk. They might recommend you a good one. After finding a good trainer, discuss with them about the training method they intent to teach. Numerous dog training methods have been developed over the years and some have been in and some have been out of fashion. Question the trainer about the method of training they use, what are its benefits, and why are they using that method. You can ask for references also.

You can choose to find a training professional for your dog or you can train by yourself. But the important thing is to teach your dog socializing and commands.

Areas to cover in training include:

1. Socializing to a stranger: This is very easy to do since you can introduce them to others while you take your dog out for a walk around your neighborhood.

2. Socializing with the other dogs: This can be easily accomplished in classes for dog training, dog parks are also better places for this.

3. Steady pace leash walking: As soon as you get a new dog, you can start training on this.

4. Crate training: Since there are times when dogs need to stay in kennels for a longer time, it is important to teach your dog tolerance to stay in this environment for hours together.

5. Sit command: The first command that the new owners of the dog teach them is this.

6. The stand/down command: The stand and down commands can help your dog in developing boundaries.

7. Stay command: If you take your dog in an environment which has a lot of distractions, this command is very important. Your dog should master this command.

You have a lot of potential benefits if you have a dog which is well trained. But, down the road, even a well trained dog can develop behavioral problems such as separation anxiety. It gives a nice feeling to be around a well trained dog and training helps in strengthening the bond between humans and animals.

A rabbit owner won’t be effective unless he knows the common diseases that might affect his pet and the cures that he can do to cure it when keeping rabbits. Most rabbits only suffer from minor ailments which can be easily tended through first aid. Examples of common paraphernalia which can be included in a first aid kit for these animals are cotton balls, eye-dropper, rubbing alcohol, rectal thermometer, and Q-tips.

There are some rabbit disease, however, which are more serious and need more attention. This is one of the most serious among rabbit diseases because it doesn’t have any cure at all. One example is pasteurella which is characterized by discharges from the nose and matting of the front paws. Though there are some antibiotics which can be given, the medication will only mask the symptoms of the disease but not thoroughly cure the animal.

Some other rabbit diseases are coccidiosis, ear-mites, and fur-mites. Coccidiosis has two types namely intestinal and live form and is caused by a protozoan parasite damaging the intestinal tracts or bile ducts. Though this is considered as some of the mildest of all the rabbit diseases, not treating it can lead to more serious illnesses like Mucoid enteropathy or enterotoxemia. Coccidioisis can be treated by putting sulfaquinoxyline in the rabbits’ drinking water for a couple of days. Ear-mites, on the other hand, are caused by a parasite called Psoreptes Cuniculi which settles on the ear canal of rabbits. Though not that severe, they irritate the animals so much to the point that their severe scratching causes infections.

Moreover, fur-mites are characterized by having dandruff like flakes on the rabbit’s fur. This is caused by bacteria like Parasitivorax and Gibbus and is mostly seen on the back of the neck. Though this can be easily treated, severe cases of it can lead to dermatitis. This can be cured by using cat flea powder mixed with Listerine mouthwash. The mixture should be rubbed on the infected area for ten days. Other formulas which can also be used are Ivermectine or Zimectine Horse Paster Wormers.

Some tips which can be done to protect these animals from acquiring rabbit diseases are cleaning the cage regularly, placing the cage in a warm and dry setting, and keeping the equipment and hutches sanitized. Also, isolating new rabbits for two to four weeks can also be helpful until to make sure that they are free of diseases.

What could be better than having a dog? They are adorable, fun, and extremely loyal. Most dog owners would agree that dogs are the best friends of men. They truly are that special.

Of course, they also have tons of energy that needs to be burned off. Getting them enough exercise is quite a responsibility on our part. Moreover, we need to take care of their feeding and attend to any health issues.

Of course, one more aspect of having a dog is their training. For example, if your dog jumps up on people this might not be desired by some, or it might be outright dangerous.

You may also be asking the same question: How to prevent my dog from jumping at people? It is important to know that this is caused by excitement and excess energy that the dog has. This may cause accidents especially if the dog jumps at a child.

So this really means that you need to teach him to stop it. You could go about it the following way: Instead of welcoming his gesture, simply turn away as he is about to jump. Then ignore him.

If you are persistent in this approach your dog will learn that he does not gain anything from jumping up on you. You will only ignore him, which is something he does not like.

Your reaction will let him know that misbehavior will not be rewarded in any shape or form. This is something he really needs to understand.

As soon as your dog settles down and stops jumping you can give him a reward which can be a pat or a scratch behind the ear.

You and I both know how smart dogs can be. And when it comes to rewards, they are especially sharp. So they will learn to behave to get the reward and avoid misbehavior. All it takes is for you to be persistent.

Most puppies love to touch stuff that they are not supposed to touch. What can you do to prevent him from doing this? Here are some tips of how to teach your puppy to listen to you when you want him not to touch certain things.

However, make sure when you are teaching your puppy obedience that you are patient and calm, as you don’t want them to become afraid of you. So here is some advice on how to get your puppy to leave certain things alone.

Maybe your pup messes around just because you never taught him not to do so. Maybe you didn’t make your rules clear. So this is what you can do in this case: Remove all the things your dog has touched before. If he touches stuff he hasn’t touched before also take it away.

Your dog will realize that they aren’t supposed to touch those things, and will eventually get used to not messing around with stuff.

If this method doesn’t work, you can take a more active role. What you need to do is to teach your dog to obey a simple command. You can call the command “no” or “leave it” or anything else you want.

Using this command tells your dog not to touch something he is not allowed to touch or not doing something that you don’t want him to do. This is a very useful command as you will find out.

In order to teach him this command you have to be very observant. When he touches something you don’t want him to touch make a loud noise. This will catch your dog by surprise and he will look at you.

Then say “no” in an intimidating voice. Do this every time your dog tries to touch something that he is not supposed to. In time, your puppy will leave things alone, before touching them, just because of your command.

Once more: Don’t wait until he touches stuff. Give him the no command as soon as he starts thinking about it.

By : Stephen Whitehouse

Pet health insurance is not on the priority list of many people. However, it’s true that dog owners adore their faithful companion and shower it with food delicacies, toys of the latest variety, take them with pride for fashion shows and may even decide to accompany them to resorts where pets are treated as clients. So if some owners decide to purchase health insurance for their friends it is not surprising. By a rough estimate 3% American dogs enjoy insurance benefits and the graph is increasing annually. Many companies offer pet insurance to employees as a benefit.

Longer Life spans and Better pet Medicine

The longevity of pets has gone up because of betterment in veterinary services. Refined and advanced technology help detect symptomatic details of disease in initial stages which was impossible up till a few years ago. Mercy killing was the answer to many undetected illnesses which is not so now. Even among the certain pets like dogs it is possible to give treatment like open heart surgery, radiation, pacemaker implants, kidney transplant, dialysis, etc. It is true such treatments give a long leach of painless life to pets but its exorbitant cost is beyond the means of many owners. Pet insurance can solve this dilemma for the owners.

What pet health Insurance Plans Offer?

The market is flooded with companies that propose pet insurance. The plan taken decides the premium. There are illness policies, accidental policies and comprehensive schemes. Immunization, preventive treatment, regular check-ups etc are covered under the schemes. Many factors influence the premium slab. These variables include age, breed, pedigree, and way of life, locality of residence, prior health history, and coverage option taken. A typical policy works out to be of $25-$30 every month. Not many companies insure pets beyond a decade. As of now Veterinary Pet Insurance Company claims to be pioneer in pet heath insurance scheme. However North American pet owners prefer to use the services of Pet Care Pet Insurance Company.

Some points to consider

Pet owners contemplating pet insurance coverage need to research on a few variables offered by insurance companies before a final decision-

Does the insurance company permits alternative vet

The duration of the waiting period

Premium break-ups and concessions

Policy coverage items and those outside the preview

Claim honoring time frame

The certified authentic company details

In search of facts and figures many dog owners visit ambest.com; is a company that not only gives the latest update, data of insurance but also reviews of other dog owners to make you wiser.

Is Pet Insurance Right For You?

Senior the pet more the complication and equally expensive is the treatment. Probably the owner should do a little introspection:

How would I handle an expensive dog treatment?

Would I be able to tolerate mercy killing, but would the best treatment save its life?

Do I have the resources for expensive treatment?

If economic tally of premium paid and claim made is done you may find yourself a loser but remember pet is not about economics it’s about emotions and well being.

By: Stephen Whitehouse

The problem of excess fat is not only restricted to humans anymore. Cats, dogs and other pets have also joined the brigade of human beings in the battle of losing extra weight. The obesity problem among pets is found to be increasing at a pretty fast rate. So, it is now a challenge for the owners to keep their pet healthy without paying a huge lump sum.

Due to the obesity, just like their owners, pets are susceptible to high blood pressure, diabetes, osteoarthritis, respiratory or heart disease and several forms of cancer. But, there is some solution to extra weight of pets as well, just like their human counterparts.

More movement and lesser calories

If you burn many calories and make more movement, the more you will be losing weight. The simple formula is applicable to pets as well. Monitor on the amount of food your pet take each day. You cannot allow your pet to be lethargic. But, if you are not an expert and a new pet owner, always check out with expert veterinaries as they can give you an idea regarding the perfect weight loss regimen.

Activities for your pet dog

You can take your pet for a one mile walk. Keep your pet bound in chain; keep a comfortable distance with the pet so that the chain does not choke your dog. It is best if you can finish this one mile within 15 minutes. With time, you should be able to master it and then you will be able to finish the walk in 12 minutes. This is definitely a great idea to keep not only your pet, but you fit as well.

You can play with your dog with tennis balls or basketballs. If your pet is reluctant to give you back the ball, then run after it and get it back only to toss again. Continue for some minutes and this will allow you to burn a lot of calories.

You can use tug toys as well. Indulge your dog in a makeshift tug of war. You will find the rope knots available at pet shops to be very useful for this purpose.

Activities for your pet cat

Cats are not as active as the dogs, so you cannot repeat the same methods. You can use the red flash pen to make your cat chase the red dot inside your home. If you can put feather toys on sticks then it helps cats to hop as well.

Check what the favorite toy of your pet is. Hide it somewhere inside your home where it is unlikely to be found. The cat will continue to hunt for its prize. You can repeat this method by hiding the food bowl as well.

Choice of food is important

Always avoid high calorie foods for your pets. Some food items to be avoided include candy, ice cream, cake etc. If you can make a good habit of taking healthy food, your pet is bound to follow you sooner or later. Make your pet drink as much as water possible and also some proper healthy snacks. It should be able to lose weight at no time.

What is the name of your pet? More interestingly, what type of an animal is your pet? The point is, what you already know is that your pet is a member of your family, maybe your best friend but, what you do not know yet if it is a brand name. A good brand name will therefore compliment the type of owner you are and give meaning to the representations you send out there.

Importance of pet accessories

Cats, dogs, rats and even chicken make the best pets. However, snakes as well as toads can be good pets as well. They may be ugly, or scary to your friends, but truth be told; no one is going to like your pet, never will, unless; you upgrade their present look.

As it has been said, a nation is judged by the way its animals are treated. The treatment you give your animal acts as a disclosure mechanism that people use to make presumptions about your personality. To send the right picture of you, the pet owner has to accessorize his/her pet by following the instructions below, to enhance their glitz and glamour.

Ensure that your pet has a full range supply of food, medication, food bowls and collars. In addition to those, build or buy them pet houses, furniture and jewelries that are not irritating or ones that may cause allergic reactions. Once in a while, groom your pet. A properly groomed pet improves their hygiene hence keeping them healthy. This includes treating them with hair/fur care products, clippers, soap and shampoo.

Shop for the accessories

Go shopping for your pet in any local pet store or through the Internet. Shopping online gives convenience and offers a wide range from which to choose. Unique accessories make your pet stand out from the rest and become the envy of others; so go for it! Among the most common of accessories for pets are the loiusdog hairpins, Chihuahua bell collar charm, dog bows, pet necklaces, hair bows, dog anklets, socks, life vest jackets and neck warmers. Nail painting your pet is not a bad idea at all. They too need some tender, loving and care.

Homemade accessories

You may not be that much interested in buying accessories from outside. Solution is, make some at home with some household items. Use some cotton, stitch it with a colorful cloth and it may acts as a great wear for your pet. It can be a good idea to make a ramp for your pet with wood. This will help it to get inside places where it cannot usually, like car. You can also use sponge to make a bed for your pet. Jumping over it can become a fun activity for the pet.

Finally, you have to flaunt what you have to your friends and family. Enroll you pet in talent and fashion shows if you are positive that it has something special. It would be great to have your pet in one or two commercial advertisements.

Dog collars are not new thing in market. They are put around the neck of a dog. They help in controlling, identification and fashioning up your dog. Basic information like the name, number or medical information about the dog is written on the color. They also help in directing or teaching a dog.

You have to style up your dog as you do yourself. Dog collars come in variety of colors, designs and textures. If you want something styled up, unique, colorful and up to the standards of fashion, then you need to consider getting your dog a leather collar. Its advantages run deeper than its fashion value and its availability is around the globe.

Durability is important

When you are buying your dog a collar, you want something that will last; something that is worthy of your money. You should consider buying your dog a leather collar because it is very durable. Leather materials last long because they are made from animal skin and save you the cost of buying a new one every time the collar is tattered. They may be expensive but worth. Besides, leather has an aesthetic value that is unrivalled by other materials.

Size does matter

A dog collar should be the right size. Not too tight that it chocks your dogs or too lose that it restricts its movement. Leather dog collars come in different sizes to suit your dog. They ensure your dog is comfortable and his movements are not restricted. They are the best choice for your dog however you have to put into consideration the behavior of the dog. If your dog has little or no problem of rubbing this is the best choice.

Your dog can be identified

At times when your dog is playing he wanders away and may get lost, stolen or when you are traveling may be put together with other similar dogs. Having a leather collar with his identification name or number will help you get back your dog.

Leather collars are fashionable

When you are buying a dog collar you want something that matches with your dog, one that other people look at and admire. This means something that will go with almost all its clothes if you dress your dog. Leather dog color offers you this laxity. Their colors come in the most natural form to suit your dog. Be it black, white, brown or a mixture of both.

The other side of the coin

Dogs like to play around and in that they may get very dirty. It is advisable you remove his leather collar when he is doing so. If you opt to remove it make sure he is within your watch to prevent him from getting lost. Do the same when he is in water to prevent odor. Every once in a while clean his leather collar. This will help in preserving good smell for your dog.

Vegans cannot use it

The other disadvantage is that they are made from animal skin. Vegetarians or vegans cannot use them because it is against their principles.

The advantages of leather dog collars however outnumber the disadvantages so now that you have both sides of the leather dog collars, it’s advisable you rush and get one for your dog.

Imagine the disappointment when an expensive new toy does not catch the fancy of your pet cat and is discarded! Well now you have an alternative. Use the forsaken household material to create a new toy for your cat. The new creativity will not only please the cat but will keep your surroundings cleaner as well.

The Catnip Sock

Pets love to play with your old pair of socks; the pet will prefer it better if it carries the scent of the owner. The sock can be filled loosely and then tied with catnip, the aromatic herb. Any holes in the socks can be plugged. Pass it to the cat and enjoy the acrobatic reaction.

Jingle Bottle Toy

Empty capped bottle well washed and cleaned with soap can be a toy with little imagination. Once it is dry, slip in some jungle bells inside; cap it firmly or else close the mouth with a tape. Do not be disheartened if jingle bells are not available. There is alternative in the form of cereal, rice, arid beans, macaroni, or other similar noise producing household things. All have the same impact. Present it to the cat for frolic.

String or shoe lace chase toy

Some remaining string, even a shoe lace will do. All you need is some feathers or better a stuffed toy. Tie this to one end of the string and place it in front of the cat. Keep the loose end with you. Occasionally give a jerk to the string; the object towards the cat will move and it will chase to capture it. This leisure activity is best done under supervision.
There are ample options among household items which can right away be converted into play things for the cat. These require no more additions. Present the following items to the cat and watch it play.

Tennis balls

Cardboard box

Worn out hair bands

Straws used for drinking

Cork of wine bottles

Rings that cover milk bottles

Empty toilet paper tubes

Toilet paper tube can be made more tempting if it is swelled up with old tissue papers or still better by cat food. Enjoy the fun as the cat struggles with concentration to reach the inside stuff to eat. Similar idea can be used with the cardboard box. Fill it will tissue papers and the cat is most likely to take a plunge inside and shred the paper to bits. The ideas are novel but the play den needs tidying up once the game is over. It is an added work for the owner.

Such instantaneously fun providing things cost nothing and keep the home tidy of waste material as well. The owner and the pet enjoy good time together. Reuse and recycle for the love of feline friend which is like a family member. So it becomes all the more necessary to keep it happy and in good spirit. An ill tempered angry cat will be calm and composed once it has enjoyed a good playful activity.

Just as there are many dog breeds, so are the dog collars. There are many dog collars available in the market, thereby giving you the freedom to choose the perfect one that suits you and your pet.

Dog collars are used in controlling and training the dog. If you want a collar that you will be using to attach dog leash, then the normal dog collar is the perfect one for you. It is also the most common one.

Measure the neck

In order to come up with the right collar, measure the dog’s neck by taking the measurements a few more inches down from the head. Add an extra inch or two. You may also put two fingers beneath the tape as you measure. This is to ensure that when the collar is in his neck, he will neither get choked nor get loose and come out.

Consider the length

If you are shopping a collar for a puppy, remember that the young dog is still growing hence; it is advisable to leave some space for growth. Since puppies also like to chew, make sure that it isn’t too long to make the chewing job easier for the puppy.

Measurements help

Take a tape measure with you on the day you go to buy a collar. Manufacturers have different ways of measuring and their measurement may conflict with your initial measurements. You don’t want to end up buying a collar that won’t fit your dog, so even if conflict arises, go for the manufacturer, after all he must be an expert in all these!

Check the collar

Do a quick collar check regularly. Check to see if it’s getting worn out or being chewed by the dog hence becoming frayed. If it needs replacement, do so as soon as possible. If not, your dog may stray or get lost as fast as you got it. Keep the collar selection as simple as possible. Ensure that no part of the collar catches or tugs your dog’s hair.

‘Snap-together’ collars work best for most dogs. This is because they are convenient, neater looking and attractive than the sturdy buckled collars. The latter are best suited for the huge and strong which are more likely to lunge whenever excited.

Nylon collars and leads

Most dogs are leather chewers. You should therefore keep checking the collar and replace it on regular basis when almost worn out. An alternative to frequent replacing is the use of the ‘nylon web collars’ that are not only inexpensive but are also sturdy and come in various fashionable designs-colors, styles and patterns.

Nylon is the best material to use for dog collars and leads. It does not shrink, dry stiff upon drying of wetness, and can also be machine washed to remain fresh and clean. Nylon collars are also quite adjustable. Once you adjust them to the size of your dog, then snap it around its neck, you no longer have to remember the hole it was in initially.

Dog collars and leads provide adequate control on your pet dog. They are available in most shops and online as well at a cheap price. With one, you are not only assured of your dog’s safety but submissiveness as well. Indeed, you will have a companion that stands by you at whichever time of day that you need him.
